Plater-welder training | start on September 2024 in Kuopio

Come to study Vocational Qualification in Mechanical Engineering and Production Technologies to Kuopio, Finland! After graduation, you will become a plater-welder.

You will study at our modern well-equipped premises in Savo Vocational College in Savilahti Campus, Kuopio. The practical training periods take place in the companies in the region and will make up an important part of the education.

The work of plater-welders includes welding, modifying and joining metal sheets together. Plater-welders work within larger productions manufacturing steel pieces according to the relevant production drawings and instructions. Their tasks can include, for example, various welding jobs, as well as cutting and bending metal sheets.

Plater-welders have the skills to use modern CNC machinery and equipment in their work.
They work within the metal industry, manufacturing metal sheet pieces and welded metal sheets and producing various steel structures or parts. Steel structures are used in various machines, buildings and vehicles.

Who can apply?

You can apply if you have

  • High school certificate or the general school-leaving certificate
  • Good command of the English language
  • Good IT-skills
  • Good physical and mental condition to study and work in the mechanical engineering and production technology industry
  • You will be able to start your studies in Kuopio in September 2024.
  • Certificate of the international English test Duolingo (see instructions below)*
  • Enough funds for living expenses on the applicant’s account to be presented for the immigration office for the resident permit. More information on Finnish Immigration Service.
  • At least 18 years of age.


Please note that the Teams interviews are held during weeks 11–12, March 2024, and you need to be able to start your studies in Kuopio in 2 September 2024. You cannot change the start time of your studies. Make sure you have valid residence permit before you come.

    Application procedure (1–7)

    1. Make motivational video
      • Record a motivational video (max. 2 minutes) according to the instructions.
        See instructions at the bottom of this page. In video, answer these questions:
        • Introduce yourself with few words.
        • Why do you wish to study in this training? And why in Finland?
        • Are there aspects why studying in Finland would be easy for you? What kind of challenges you might face?
        • What are your future goals and how studies in this training align with them?
    2. Take The Duolingo English Test 
      • The Duolingo English Test is an online English proficiency test that can be taken in under an hour. The test is taken via a computer with a camera and includes a proficiency score, video interview and writing sample. Certified results are available within 48 hours of the test session.
      • Applicant must have Duolingo English test score minimum 85 points.
      • The Duolingo test certificate cannot be older than six months.
      • Note that the English test results take 48 hours to verify. So do it before filling the application. You must attach Duolingo certificate to your application.
      • On Duolingo test choose Savo Vocational College and save the certificate to attach to your application (not by email). You must pay the test certificate yourself.
      • We don't accept any other language tests.
    3. Attachments and certificates for your application
      • Make sure that you have all the necessary attachments and upload them to the application when you fill out the form (a total of at most 6 pcs in .pdf or .jpg format):

    4. Fill out the application form
      • Fill out your application here.
        • Note that the application form cannot be revised/updated, so you must fill it out correctly. Make sure you got all the documents/certificates and link to your video ready when applying.
    5. Take the preliminary test by 28th of Feb
      • After you have applied, you will get a link to the preliminary test via email (remember to check your junk-mail box).
      • You must take the test, otherwise your application is not complete. 
      • The test measures the applicant’s skills in the following areas: mathematics, physics, geometry and logical reasoning.
      • You must do it yourself, and you can do it only once.
      • The test must be done by 28 February 2024.
    6. Microsoft Teams interview
      • The applicants will be selected for a Teams interview based on application, motivational video and tests. 
      • If you are selected for the interview, you will receive an invitation via email.
      • Interviewing is carried out by using Microsoft Teams. You need to have your camera on. 
      • Make sure you have a quiet place where you can speak undisturbed.
      • Join the meeting at the appointed time (UTC +2)
      • When arriving to interview, bring your passport with you or an official photo identification.
      • All interviews will be recorded.
    7. Student selection
      • The selection team selects the most suitable applicants for the degree studies.
      • Student selection will be done in the beginning of April 2024. All applicants will be informed by email.
      • Student selection is based on your application, interview, language test and preliminary test.
      • We emphasise motivation, language skills, work experience and future plans in the field.
    8. Start of studies
      • Studies will start on 2 September 2024 in Kuopio. 


    Study degree fee and other costs

    Material fee (single payment) will be 250 euros and it covers the following items:

    • automatic welding helmet and safety shoes,
    • measuring tools,
    • qualification cards, 
    • as well as all the texts and materials needed for the course. 


    School will provide students with the necessary work clothes.
    No annual tuition fees will be charged.

    Other costs are for example housing and food which students need to pay themselves.


    Classroom teaching starts on 2 September 2024 in Kuopio. The course is taught during the day and the various parts of the degree are completed according to your personal competence development plan.

    Competence is demonstrated and evaluated through jobs related to the degree carried out in real workplaces and educational institutions.

    The first step is taking part in a HOKS (personal competence development plan) meeting in September 2024 with the tutor. The study duration is 2 - 3 years based on personal competence development plan (HOKS). Previously acquired skills can be taken into consideration.
